Risk feels different when expressed in dollars. Saying you can tolerate a 30% fall is easier than seeing what that means for savings built over several years. A portfolio stress test makes the potential loss concrete before market pressure arrives.

The exercise is not a forecast. It explores possible outcomes so you can judge whether the investment amount, time horizon and need for cash are compatible.

Translate percentages into money

Suppose a hypothetical S$50,000 portfolio holds S$35,000 in equities and S$15,000 in a lower-volatility allocation. If equities fall 30% and the second allocation remains unchanged, the equity loss is S$10,500. The portfolio falls to S$39,500, a 21% decline.

Now suppose the second allocation also falls 5%. It loses S$750, leaving the portfolio at S$38,750. The overall loss becomes S$11,250, or 22.5%. An allocation described as defensive should not automatically be assumed to remain stable under every condition.

A fall also changes the recovery required. After a 30% decline, S$100 becomes S$70. Returning to S$100 requires a gain of S$30 on S$70, approximately 42.9%. Recovery is uncertain and may take longer than your spending deadline allows.

Add a household scenario

Consider what happens if a market decline coincides with reduced income. Would you need to sell investments to pay rent or a housing instalment? Money required soon should be evaluated separately from capital intended for long-term goals.

Test your reaction in practical terms. Could you continue normal contributions? Would the loss disrupt sleep or lead to impulsive selling? A questionnaire answer is less useful than considering the actual consequences of the dollar loss.

Diversification can reduce some risks, but it does not guarantee against loss. Examine concentration in employers, industries, currencies and property exposures across your wider finances. Owning several funds does not necessarily mean their holdings are different.

Adjust before the pressure arrives

If the tested loss is unacceptable, consider changing the amount invested, the allocation or the time horizon. Do not simply replace the stress assumption with a smaller decline until the plan looks comfortable.

Write down the conditions under which you would review the portfolio. A change in personal circumstances can justify a change in strategy; daily price movement alone may not. The purpose is to build a plan whose risks you understand well enough to maintain.
