Subscriptions are easy to start and easy to forget. A Singapore household may pay for streaming, cloud storage, fitness, software and delivery services through different cards. The individual amounts can appear harmless while the combined total becomes a meaningful commitment.
Begin with bank and card statements, not memory. Review at least three months and check annual renewals separately. Identify the service, price, renewal date and the person using it. A charge you do not recognise should be investigated promptly.
Measure cost against actual use
Suppose a household pays S$18, S$15, S$12 and S$25 monthly for four services. The total is S$70 monthly or S$840 annually. Cancelling the S$12 and S$25 services saves S$37 monthly, or S$444 a year, assuming prices stay unchanged.
Usage gives the numbers context. A S$25 service used twice monthly costs S$12.50 per use. A S$15 service used twenty times costs S$0.75 per use. Cost per use does not measure enjoyment perfectly, but it helps identify services retained mainly because cancellation has been postponed.
Annual billing requires care. A fictional S$120 annual plan may look cheaper than S$12 monthly, but only if the service is needed for enough months. If you need it for three months, S$36 of monthly access is cheaper than a full year.
Cancel deliberately
Check notice periods, cancellation charges and what happens to stored files or benefits. Back up important data before reducing storage. Keep confirmation that cancellation was completed; deleting an app may not stop billing.
For overlapping entertainment services, consider rotating them instead of keeping every subscription active. For software, check whether a less expensive tier supports the features actually used. Avoid sharing accounts in ways that breach the provider's terms.
Free trials belong on the same list. Set a reminder before the billing date and decide whether the service is valuable without the temporary offer. A free month becomes expensive if it leads to twelve months of unused payments.
Give each renewal a purpose
A useful rule is to keep services that save time, support work or provide enjoyment worth their cost. The objective is not to cancel everything. It is to stop paying for services without making a conscious choice.
Review the list after household changes, such as moving, starting a new job or buying a device that includes an overlapping service. Small recurring savings become meaningful because they repeat without requiring a fresh decision every day.
