A cheap repair quotation can become expensive if it excludes parts, addresses only part of the fault or requires another paid visit. For Singapore homeowners and tenants, the useful comparison is between clearly defined solutions to the same problem.
Before calling a provider, record the appliance or fitting model, symptoms and previous repairs. Photos can help explain the issue, but avoid opening electrical equipment or attempting unsafe work. For a rental home, clarify responsibility with the landlord under the tenancy terms before committing to a repair.
Compare the full price
Suppose Provider A quotes S$90 for inspection and labour, with parts charged separately. Provider B quotes S$150 including a specified S$50 replacement part. If A later charges S$70 for the part, its total becomes S$160. The original S$90 headline was not the complete cost.
Ask whether transport, call-out charges, taxes and follow-up visits are included. Obtain the price for the proposed work before authorising it. If diagnosis is required first, agree what the diagnostic charge covers and whether it is credited against the repair.
A repair guarantee should be understood in detail. Check its duration, covered fault, exclusions and how a claim is made. Do not assume a promise to return means every future issue will be repaired free.
Compare repair with replacement
Suppose a repair costs S$180 and a suitable replacement costs S$500 including installation and disposal. The repair preserves S$320 in immediate cash. However, age, reliability and the likely need for more repairs affect whether that saving is worthwhile.
If you estimate that the repair will provide two additional years of service, its simple annual cost is S$90. A replacement expected to last five years has a purchase cost of S$100 per year. These are uncertain planning estimates and omit energy use, future repairs and the time value of money.
For an energy-consuming appliance, compare operating costs as well. NEA's life cycle approach can help, but do not manufacture a precise remaining lifespan for an appliance whose condition is unknown.
Keep evidence for the next decision
Retain the quotation, invoice, part description and warranty terms. Record the repair date. This history helps if the same problem returns and makes future repair-versus-replace choices less dependent on memory.
Choosing well does not require always selecting the most expensive provider. It requires knowing what each quotation includes and whether the proposed repair solves the problem you actually have.
