A low monthly mobile price can be expensive once a handset payment, activation charge or temporary discount is included. Singapore shoppers can make a clearer comparison by converting competing offers into the same period and separating the phone from the service.
Begin with your actual usage. Review recent data consumption, calls, roaming needs and coverage in places you regularly visit. Paying for unused capacity is wasteful, but an unsuitable plan that requires frequent add-ons can cost more than a slightly higher base price.
Put the offers on equal terms
Suppose a fictional SIM-only service costs S$20 monthly and a separately purchased handset costs S$900. Over twenty-four months, the combined cost is S$480 plus S$900, or S$1,380.
A fictional bundle costs S$65 monthly with S$100 paid upfront for the phone. Its twenty-four-month total is S$1,560 plus S$100, or S$1,660. The difference is S$280 before any additional fees. Check whether both examples provide a comparable handset, service and included benefits.
If the SIM-only user keeps an existing phone, their cash requirement falls further. However, compare alternatives based on what you actually need. A new phone may be necessary if the old one is unreliable or no longer receives required security updates.
Read the cost after the promotion
An introductory price for six months is not the price for the entire contract. Add the discounted months and ordinary-price months separately. Include activation charges, delivery, mandatory add-ons and any taxes not already included in the quoted amount.
Check what happens when you cancel or change plans. Outstanding device instalments and service termination charges can make a supposedly cheap upgrade expensive. Retain the written terms that applied when you signed up.
Roaming deserves a separate calculation. A plan with included roaming may be valuable to someone travelling frequently and irrelevant to someone who rarely leaves Singapore. Compare expected annual travel usage rather than choosing the largest allowance automatically.
Make the choice before choosing the phone
Set a maximum total cost, then select a plan and handset combination within it. Consider repair, a less expensive model or a longer replacement cycle if those options meet your needs.
Keep a reminder before the contract or promotion ends. Review actual usage and the latest available terms at that point. A plan that was competitive two years ago may no longer suit you, but changing it should be based on a fresh total-cost comparison.
