A small percentage commission can still be costly when a minimum charge applies. For Singapore investors making regular contributions, the relevant fee is the actual dollar amount divided by the purchase value.

Read the full fee schedule. Brokerage may be only one component. Exchange charges, taxes on fees, currency conversion and platform charges can affect the total. A zero-commission label should not be assumed to mean zero cost.

Compare purchase sizes

Imagine a fictional broker charging a minimum S$5 per purchase, with no other costs in this simplified example. Investing S$200 incurs a fee equal to 2.5% of the purchase amount. On S$500, the fee is 1%. On S$1,000, it is 0.5%.

Suppose an investor has S$200 available each month. Twelve monthly purchases incur S$60 in annual brokerage. Four purchases of S$600 incur S$20. The difference is S$40, assuming the same minimum charge applies and purchase sizes do not trigger another rate.

These totals describe fees only. Buying less often leaves some money uninvested for longer. The resulting gain or loss depends on market movements and any return on waiting cash. There is no guaranteed net advantage from batching purchases.

Separate timing from affordability

A purchase schedule should fit the amount you can consistently invest after other commitments. Do not buy a larger amount merely to lower the fee percentage if doing so leaves essential bills unfunded.

Compare providers using the securities and markets you actually intend to buy. A fee attractive for one exchange may not apply to another. Include custody arrangements, transfer-out charges and the cost of eventually selling.

If foreign currency conversion has a minimum charge or spread, include it separately. A low brokerage fee can be offset by an expensive conversion. Use the net foreign currency received for a specified Singapore-dollar amount to compare conversion methods.

Set a rule you can follow

For example, decide to purchase when the contribution balance reaches a chosen amount or on a fixed quarterly date. A simple rule can reduce constant checking, but it should remain flexible when circumstances change.

Review statements after the first transaction. Confirm that actual charges match your calculation and that the investment itself is suitable. Saving S$5 on a trade is not useful if the underlying product has risks or recurring fees you did not understand.
