A cheaper refrigerator or air-conditioner can cost more over its lifetime if it uses substantially more electricity. The purchase price is only one part of the comparison. NEA advises consumers to consider life cycle cost, including estimated electricity use over the appliance's lifespan.

For a useful calculation, compare appliances that meet the same need. Different capacities and features can explain a price difference. Do not choose a smaller appliance solely because its electricity consumption looks lower if it will not serve the household.

Calculate the annual saving

Suppose Model A costs S$700 and uses 500 kilowatt-hours annually under the stated test conditions. Model B costs S$950 and uses 300 kilowatt-hours. The price premium is S$250 and the stated consumption difference is 200 kilowatt-hours a year.

Using an illustrative all-in electricity price of S$0.30 per kilowatt-hour, the annual saving is 200 × S$0.30 = S$60. A simple payback period is S$250 ÷ S$60, approximately 4.17 years. This tariff is an assumption, not a quotation of the current Singapore electricity rate.

If the appliance lasts eight years and the consumption difference remains the same, electricity savings total S$480. Subtracting the S$250 price premium gives S$230 of nominal savings, before differences in repairs, financing and the time value of money.

Check what the label does not promise

Standardised test figures help comparisons, but household usage can differ. Room temperature, operating settings, installation and maintenance affect electricity consumption. A payback calculation is an estimate, not a guaranteed bill reduction.

Use the tariff on your own bill or contract and check whether taxes are already included. Recalculate if rates change. For equipment such as air-conditioners, installation and servicing costs also belong in the comparison.

Replacing a working appliance early requires a different calculation. The new appliance's full purchase and installation cost must be justified against keeping the existing appliance, not just against another new model. Avoid treating an efficiency label as a reason to discard a functioning product automatically.

Decide using the expected period of use

If you expect to use the appliance beyond the calculated payback period, the efficient model may be financially attractive. If you will move soon, rental restrictions prevent installation or usage is very low, the result may differ.

Record the assumptions and choose a product that fits both cash available today and expected running costs. A life cycle comparison is most valuable when it makes the trade-off visible before purchase.
