A cashback card should reward spending you would already make. If a promotion persuades you to buy extra items to cross a threshold, the headline reward rate can hide a worse financial result.
Before applying for a card, examine your normal spending for three months. Identify transactions that would qualify under the actual terms. Merchant categories, exclusions, caps, statement periods and promotional conditions can change the outcome substantially.
Use the additional spending test
Imagine a fictional card paying 5% cashback on qualifying purchases after S$800 of monthly qualifying spending. A shopper normally spends S$600 on eligible items. Buying another S$200 to reach the threshold generates S$40 cashback on S$800, assuming all transactions qualify and no cap applies.
Compared with the original S$600 spending plan, the shopper has spent an additional S$160 net of the reward. That can be sensible if the extra S$200 consists of necessities that genuinely replace later purchases. It is a loss of cash if the items would otherwise never have been bought.
Now consider another fictional card paying 1.5% without a minimum. On S$600, the reward is S$9. The smaller headline percentage can leave the shopper with more money because it does not require extra purchases. These are comparison examples, not current bank offers.
Check the rules that change the calculation
Read whether cashback is calculated monthly or quarterly, when it is credited and which payment methods qualify. Do not assume that a merchant's name reveals its card classification. Examine annual fees, foreign currency costs and exclusions for recurring bills or wallet transactions.
A reward cap also matters. If a benefit is capped at S$30, spending more after reaching the cap does not increase that benefit. Measure the effective reward rate as cashback actually received divided by eligible spending, then consider any fees separately.
MoneySense explains that unpaid card balances attract interest and that rewards come with conditions. A reward strategy therefore depends on paying bills in full and on time. Cashback does not make borrowing affordable.
Run a trial with existing purchases
For one statement cycle, use the card only for expenses already in your budget. Keep a record of expected rewards and compare it with the statement. Investigate differences rather than continuing based on the advertised rate.
If managing multiple cards causes missed deadlines or extra spending, simplify. The most valuable card is the one that fits your habits and leaves you better off after the full cost of using it.
